Common Well System Problems
Well systems can develop a variety of issues over time, and being aware of the most common problems can help you catch them early. Recognizing these warning signs allows homeowners and business owners to take action before small issues become costly repairs.
- Unexpected stops or slow operation of your pump
- Low or fluctuating water pressure
- Air in the water lines
- Strange noises or vibrations in the system
Recently, we helped a homeowner in the Eagle River, WI area. He was a regional VP for a large bank in Northern WI.
He said he was having trouble with his well and was not sure if he needed to have a new well (and that a well drilling company had looked at it and quoted him $15,000 for a new well).
We told him that around 90% of the time, a well can be repaired without having to drill a new well.
What we often find is:
- The well pump has worn out and needs to be replaced.
- The pipe in the ground between the well and the house has frozen over the winter, then cracked. Now, when the well pump starts pumping water from the well to the house, it leaks into the soil underground, and only part of the water reaches the home. It appears that the well is not producing enough water, but the problem is actually that the pipe needs to be dug up and replaced with a new pipe installed deeper in the ground to prevent freezing.
- The inlet to the well underground has gotten plugged with corrosion (often from hard water or rusty water) and is choking off the water coming into the well. Tall Pines has several ways to clean the inlets to the well that usually can be completed in 3-4 hours.
What we found for this homeowner in Eagle River was that the inlet to his well was clogged, and he was only getting 1.5 gallons of water per minute from his well. We were able to clean the inlet to the well in just 3 hours and increased the flow from the well to 7.5 gallons per minute. This saved him the cost of drilling a new well, and it also prevented his yard and landscaping from being torn up by a large well-drilling truck and having to pay a landscape company to come in and repair all that damage.
